And they were revealed during the Superbowl
of all things.

Did you notice a commercial during the Superbowl
for “Jesus, He gets us!” ? Well, that ad was provided
by Dallas advertising firm “Lerma”. They claimed “we
are honored to share Jesus’ powerful message of forgiveness, unity and love!”

Another Catholic organization supported by Mark
Wahlberg introduced Hallow, an iPhone app for daily
prayer during Lent. Mark wears his faith on his
sleeve and provides some insight on several topics
including “fasting” during Lent and letting things go
that are not good for us and turning back to God.
Wow, very powerful message. The daily messages
are great reminders for Lent and moving forward.

In addition, I hope you saw the article in the Feb 14th
Knightline e-news regarding Harrison Butker, the field
goal kicker from Kansas City that had a nearly perfect
season and a Superbowl record 57-yard field goal.
Harrison has been a Knight since 2015 and he lives his
belief. He stated: “The greatest impact that I will
make with my time on this earth, is remaining dedicated to my primary vocation – helping my family get
to heaven.” Now that’s a great goal.

So quickly, very quickly, we have numerous examples
of how God and Jesus are turning lives around. I tend
to be skeptical and try to understand motives when I
first hear of these people stepping up to embrace Jesus. But we need to believe. Let’s embrace these
new ambassadors and promote them. With all the
negative news we see on TV and social media these
days, we need these uplifting messages to lead us
forward and continue our path towards righteousness.

From our Council, brothers and sisters alike are working to raise money for charities through our fabulous
Fish Fry events. Join in and work side by side with
other like-minded Catholics working for the betterment of our community. The Fish fry runs thru to
Palm Sunday weekend so there is plenty of time left
to assist. Invite your family and neighbors to come
out to eat here at St Paul’s. They will be among
friends and they will enjoy their dinner. All are welcome !

Another very important activity for our Council occurs on Palm Sunday weekend. That is the MI drive,
otherwise known as the Tootsie Roll drive. Our K of C
Council raises thousands in support of Mentally Challenged adults and children in our local communities.
We support Special Olympics and give to 7 different
organizations that provide direct support to local
families. The work we do and long hours on the
street or store front raise monies that make a difference right here and you likely know people and families that benefit from this activity. Support our Chairman Jeff Gapczynski and our team to go out and
make this drive the most successful yet.

God bless our Council and God Bless the Knights of
Columbus

Vivat Jesus !

Vincent Ursini
Spot Knightshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09882455437043227991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8497809046683305270.post-89382678370614452962024-01-22T23:00:00.000-05:002024-01-22T23:00:14.277-05:00The Knight Shield - February 2024
"The Darker the night, the brighter the stars. The
deeper the Grief, the closer is God"

These are words from a former homeless person
quoting Fyodor Dostoevsky. Do you believe in God? There will be tribulations.
No one has a free unobscured path to Heaven. This
gentlemen’s path was quite challenging, but through
the help and love of Catholic services, this man saw
the light of day and is helping those that are where
he was, desperate and destitute.

And so, our Council answers the call. Men’s Coats,
sweaters and blankets were collected to provide to
the Capuchin center to assist those in need of cold
weather gear. The Pancake Breakfast this past January was to assist the SPOT Food Pantry in providing
meals to the hungry and in need of assistance. We
service our Church and our Community at large.

A week of Charity Poker resulted in a significant increase in the Charitable funds we have available to
administer to the charities our Council supports. One
new group in particular, is the Detroit Catholic Campus Ministry, which strives to keep Christ in the lives
of college students who are away from home. Their
latest endeavor is to have students attend a Eucharistic Revival Retreat for which the State’s K of C’s councils (of which 11689 is one) pledged over $15,000 at
the recent Diocesan Winter Meeting in support.

We are embarking on another fabulous Fish Fry season, which marks one of the Council’s largest fund
raisers. Starting Feb 16th and running thru to Palm
Sunday weekend. Remember we serve up to 500
people in a 3 hour window. The need is great for volunteers, both Knights and their wives to assist.
The “Ladies of the Knights” make a huge impact to
the success of our Fish Fry service and are much appreciated. Ask your family members to assist, they
will be welcome. And for those of us that have an
open Friday, come early as prep work goes on all day.
Join the team and make a difference.

God bless our Council and God Bless the Knights of
Columbus

Vivat Jesus !

Vincent Ursini
Spot Knightshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09882455437043227991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8497809046683305270.post-36405927292080466812023-12-29T01:33:00.006-05:002023-12-29T01:35:24.827-05:00The Knight Shield - January 2024
It’s a new year. Wow 2024 is already here. My wife Andrea and I moved to Detroit area in 2002, when my nephew was 1 year old. He just graduated from Central Michigan University ! We also attended another ceremony recently for another nephew who is 20 years old and just
graduated from the Police Academy. He will be joining the
Roseville police force to “Protect and Serve”. He was just
a sparkle in his Mother’s eye when I first moved here.
You get the point, our mission is great and time doesn’t
wait for us. We have little time to make an impact in this
world. Let’s get out there and make use of our God given
talents.

Some reflection on words from the Roseville Commander
who talked about the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. When
you can do something good for people and help them in
their journey, celebrate those accomplishments loudly.
He talked about the Bad where you are unable to help or
assist people in need. And he didn’t need to talk about
the Ugly (we all know what that looks like). The fact is
that we must learn from those bad experiences and apply
the lessons moving forward to further help people. Take
action. Take your wins where you can get them.

That’s a call to participate in this Council’s awesome programs. Proceeds from the Pancake breakfast in January
will go towards our SPOT Pantry and their mission to feed
those in need. We have 180+ Knights in this Council and
I’d like to see a majority come out in support of this worthy cause. Get with our Brother Knight Kurt Buhlinger to
sign up for a task. And don’t forget the Charity Poker
Event in January, contact Michael Hartel our Worthy Program Director for that duty. If you enjoy playing cards,
you’ll love this duty.

The Council’s biggest fund raisers are coming up in February and March with the Fish Fry event and the MI Drive.
We will need all you Brothers for these activities. The Social Hall Fish Fry takes several prep people, cooks, dinner sales personnel, servers, take out organizers and dining
room support. Bring your spouse along as the "Ladies of
the Knights" do a great job and find a way to enjoy their
time while serving. These programs provide great opportunities to recruit and evangelize as well. Plus, you are
raising money for our multiple charity organizations.

Let’s get 2024 started off on the right foot. I’ve confidence this Council will do an excellent job to make these
programs successful.

Welcome, to our newly exemplified Council member Robert Hurlbert. Looking forward to working with you in this
next year.

Wishing all of you Brothers and your families a most
blessed and successful new year!

God bless our Council and God Bless the Knights of

Even when we lived in Northern Michigan, my family would come down to Detroit area to celebrate Thanksgiving and then roll into the Christmas holiday with family time. There is a spirit of Christmas in the air and it just seems that everyone is a little bit nicer this time of year.

Congratulations to the Women of Faith and our very own Ray and Lori Coughlin for the tremendous success on the Baby Bottle Drive. Both Gianna House and Abigale Ministries will both receive over $4,800 to continue their work with pregnant mothers and the support of the unborn child.

Thanks also, to you brothers, for supporting the MCREST program. A significant amount of food was acquired and prepared by St John the Apostle team. And our Council did its part in delivering the food and on some days, serving the food to homeless women and children. What a noble cause, aligned with the Holiday season.

Looking forward to the Council’s Christmas Meat sales in December raising money for the general fund. Worthy PGK Jerry Hund and team could use some help. If you can’t assist with sales, please buy some of these delicious product(s). Look for Rosary Bracelets as well !

The Knights are assisting the Men’s Group with the “Cookies with Santa” program on Dec 10th. Last month’s K of C children’s programs had awesome turn out’s. We’re expecting nothing less for this year’s program which has been growing in leaps and bounds over the last 5 years. Bring your children / grandchildren and enjoy the fun in a program that has a little Magic and emphasizes the Reason for the Season.

The Memorial Mass last month was well attended by our Council. Several family members of those wonderful Knights we lost last year came out to celebrate their lives. The K of C Color Guard came out in force and added to the wonderful Mass and Program. However, the Knights we lost did a great job for our Council and will be missed. Step up gentlemen, there are big shoes to fill.

For those of you that participated in the Rescue Project, we’ve learned a lot in a short period of time. Now it’s our turn to pass on that knowledge and continue our efforts to further evangelize and spread the good news. Thanks goes out to the Journeymen and Deacon Marc for putting on the program.

If you’re looking to get into the Christmas mood, nothing sets that off like putting up Christmas lights and decorations. See Ken Krause on Dec 1st to assist decorating the church grounds.

On a personal note, my wife Andrea and I would like to wish each of you a wonderful Christmas Season. And, may the birth of Jesus bestow his grace upon you and your families!

God Bless Our Council and God Bless the Knights of Columbus

VIVAT JESUS !

Vince Ursini

Grand Knight
Spot Knightshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09882455437043227991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8497809046683305270.post-1867913226012705572023-11-07T07:26:00.002-05:002023-11-07T07:26:29.857-05:00MAKING YOUR GARAGE SMART
https://youtu.be/F6IVu7cIEf4?si=IfaGt4UMuPd9QO_n

Spot Knightshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09882455437043227991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8497809046683305270.post-11265204990269666562023-10-26T17:35:00.002-04:002023-10-26T17:35:20.919-04:00The Knight Shield - November 2023
November is upon us and the mad rush to the end of the year has already started in earnest. October had no less than (11) programs ! It started out with the Canal Road fall clean up headed up by Greg Csernai. They did a very noticeable job of cleaning up the road way as I travel that stretch of Canal daily. Thanks to the (10) gentlemen that came out to support!

Tom Pardo our church director, lead the Rosary rally under the canopy (as it was raining all day). And at the same time Ken and Christine Krause supported the Diaconate luncheon with my wife Andrea and I. It was a well-attended event and until you participate you really don’t realize the valuable training that is going on.

The Women of Faith partnered with our Council to conduct the Baby bottle drive to benefit Gianna House and Abigale ministries as we continue our support of unwed mothers and pregnancy centers. Great work by our Treasurer Ray in support and looking forward to the report of finances from this worth while drive as the bottles keep filtering in.

11689 Council also supported Challenger Baseball Halloween activities in the social hall. Actually, there were K of C councils from St Thecla and Mt Clements in addition to our own. In addition, The Arc of Macomb and Glenn Peters elementary were in attendance as were several other organizations (12 in all). That was a special event as mentally challenged adults and children alike had a wonderful time. The Halloween outfits were really fun and the smiles and laughs coming from the children infectious. It was a terrific event lead by our program director Dan Steele and his wife Rosanne. Thanks for allowing us to participate in this special event.

Texas Hold’em event just recently concluded at Cicerelli’s with a contingent of our Knights supporting 4 days of charity poker. Mike Hartel and team are to be congratulated as it is one of the largest financial raising programs in our calendar year. Proceeds will go to support our many charitable programs.

Also, our very own Trunk Or Treat event kicked off with significantly more “trunks” than last year and roughly 100 children filling the north parking lot. It’s so great to be able to conduct a fun filled event safely within our church grounds for the parents to take their kids. Hot dogs, games, costume contests and of course sweet treats all combine to round out the experience. Makes me proud to see how our Council turns up to enjoy the fellowship of the children of the parish.

Thanks Brothers. Looking forward to your support of the MCREST program in November and the Rescue mission hosting over the next few weeks.

God bless our Council and God Bless the Knights of Columbus

Vivat Jesus !

Vincent Ursini
Spot Knightshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09882455437043227991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8497809046683305270.post-80459553843773077462023-10-15T16:12:00.008-04:002023-10-15T16:26:21.585-04:00Challenger baseball Halloween event
Challenger baseball Halloween event in social hall today. really special. The Cardinal Mooney High School
Football team was there with their staff and some
parents. It was great to see such an upstanding
group of young men. These men were not just sitting
there at the request of their coach, but actually participating in the mass and listening to another awesome homily by Father Ron. They loved the choir’s
communion song “Gonna Sing” and you could see the
spirit work in them as they clapped their approval
after the song.

It got me to thinking of my days back playing football
and what I had aspired to be while in High School.
There was a lot of uncertainty at that time, but the
more I leaned on my faith, the clearer the picture be came. It was evident to me then, that students who
had little or no faith background seemed to struggle
and lived in the now rather than plan for their lives
outside of High School. Our presence as Knights, I
believe, favorably impressed them. And, thanks to
Deacon Marc who talked about the important programs the Knights are engaged in here in this community. These young people need positive role models.
Let’s be that for our community.

I’m expecting several of these young men to join our
ranks in the Knights of Columbus sometime in the
near future and as Father Ron mentioned, maybe one
or two will have a calling to the priesthood. Let’s
continue to show our presence at church and within
our community. Let’s continue to tell our story
about what we are doing and how it impacts the lives
of others. Let’s continue to be there when people
are in need.

The Pancake Breakfast was another success thanks to
the hard work of our director Kurt Buhlinger and
those that contributed cooking, cleaning or serving.
The money raised is going to McCrest to assist with
the feeding of homeless men, women and children.
What a great cause.
Thanks Brothers. I’m proud to be part of this Council
and excited about the programs we have coming up.
God bless our Council and God Bless the Knights of

has been. The Ice Cream Social was terrific, the
Council Camping at Algonac was well attended with a
special appearance by the "Ladies of the Knights", the
Council Picnic at Kurt Buhlinger’s place was a big hit
and Shrub and Tree Trimming all got done.

In addition to all the fun stuff (I hear some groans
from the Shrub & Tree trimming volunteers), two exemplification ceremonies occurred, one in each
month of July and August. We welcomed (3) new
members into SPOT 11689 K of C Council, (3) new
Knights into John F Kennedy Council and (1) new
Knight into St Thecla Council. Plus, we have (2) more
pending for Council 11689. That’s a great start to the
recruiting year and congratulations goes out to our
Membership Director Phil Mularski. These words
from Grand Knight Tom Torrento from John F Kennedy Council made an impression on me. He told the
new Knights that “my decision to join the K of C was
the most important thing I’ve done in my life, and it
will be yours as well”. What a great attitude. And
when I hear the feedback and sincere thanks we received from the (7) local organizations that the MI
Drive fund went to, we are all reminded how important our efforts are and that all our hard work
pays off.

The Exemplification Committee chaired by Mike Hartel and George Loewen in the past two months was
outstanding. We had several State officers in the August Exemplification that personally thanked me for
the great job, but the thanks goes to the members of
the Exemplification team. You made our Council look
good, thanks Brothers!

A recent Journeymen’s session asked the question;
Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire (to be
used only when you need it)? I’m reminded of the
popular Country song “Need a Favor”. The lyrics
read “who am I to expect a Savior, if I only talk to
God when I need a favor”. Those words hit hard. Sin
and prayer are incompatible . . . Pray more, sin
less . . .

It will be another busy month in September with a
Corporate Communion on the 17th and the Pancake
Breakfast on the 24th. Rise up Brothers and let’s
tackle those challenges as well.

God bless our Council and God Bless the Knights of

Football arrives before the end of the month with men working shoulder to shoulder for a common goal. Sound familiar?

It’s a good time to talk about one of our founding pillars; Fraternity. The Ice Cream Social was a good example. Several Knights came out to get things set up and share in some comradery. The tent got put up in record time and although the weather was a bit of a struggle on Saturday, Deacon Marc came through with access to the Social Hall. Sunday, the sky was filled with sunshine and warmth. We had fun with Parishioners and fellow Knights alike. Having served roughly 160 constituents over the weekend, the event was a very successful activity. We received compliments and thank you’s from many of those participating in addition to Father Bill (who was a joy to have around). If you haven’t already done so, check out the terrific photos our Worthy Webmaster Ken Dudley posted. It was a satisfying feeling working alongside our brothers (and sisters) to accomplish that goal. Congratulations go out to our chairmen, Ken and Christine Krause.

Knights have many opportunities within this Council to join with like-minded friends and family to go to Mass together, eat, socialize, and do the good of the order. But it goes beyond just the fun stuff. Our struggles are not just in the physical. Support for our religious goals is just as important. And YES, we need our fellow man for that as well. Lean on each other for help when needed. Rob Amsler introduced a great new program with Rosary bracelets. And from his personal experience, just transferring a rosary bracelet from your wrist to the wrist of someone in need will help them. I know personally, there is much to learn about our religion, and I open myself to listening to Brothers who are much further down that path than I. It’s a reassurance of the promise that God has made to us.

Looking forward to seeing all in our upcoming Potluck at Mr. Buhlinger’s place and as always . . .

God bless our Council and God Bless the Knights of Columbus

Vivat Jesus !

Vincent Ursini

Spot Knightshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09882455437043227991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8497809046683305270.post-678173335287174302023-07-16T09:34:00.004-04:002023-07-16T09:34:39.574-04:00GRAND KNIGHT VINCE!!!

Spot Knightshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09882455437043227991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8497809046683305270.post-51009591068110470342023-06-24T12:20:00.004-04:002023-06-24T12:20:57.509-04:00The Knight Shield - July 2023 - Welcome Our New Grand Knight -- VINCE!!!!
Summer is here and July is the start of our new K of C Fraternal year. It will be a busy one again this year with a new twist. A new Grand Knight and Deputy Grand Knight.

First let me say, that I am truly honored to be the Grand Knight of SPOT Council #11689. It truly is a blessing to do this job now. Since I've been with the Knights we've had terrific leadership. Starting with Bruce Arnold and his three terms, I learned a lot from Bruce about negotiation and working with other SPOT groups. Then on to Art Krygowski with his passion for youth programs; Mike Hartel pulling together new social programs like Euchre and of course our latest three term grand knight Tom Gray who negotiated us thru the COVID times and on to normality once again. Tom was the right guy, at the right time for this council. So, I've got some terrific mentors and I’m confident they will bring me up to speed quickly. I’m open to constructive criticism from all of our members, officers or not. I want to listen to your ideas. This Council succeeds with all of us moving in the same direction. Our District Warden Ed Perkins has said that “our Community is better off because of the actions of the Knights of this Council”. And he’s absolutely right.

A note to our new Deputy Grand Knight, Gary Skarb. Gary and I have been on similar paths over the years starting out with the Men’s Group under Ken Dombrowski and moving on as officers in the Knights Council. He will be a terrific deputy grand knight and I know we will work well together. I thank him for stepping up and for the Brotherhood for embracing him.

No one person does this job alone and I know the hard-working folks here in the council we'll continue to make this council successful. I'll work hard to do my part to assist and lead this great council onto continued success with your help Brothers. My passion is for giving young people a reason to come back to church and continue their relationship with Jesus. And, in being part of the original Parish picnic program, I’d like to look for opportunities to restart that program. Appreciate the vote of confidence and look forward to getting to work even closer with each and every one of you.

God bless our Council and God Bless the

Knights of Columbus.

Vivat Jesus!

Vincent Ursini
Spot Knightshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09882455437043227991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8497809046683305270.post-36774672269711578742023-06-24T12:20:00.002-04:002023-06-24T12:20:33.094-04:00A Parting Note from PGK Tom Gray
As I wrote in my last newsletter article, I am truly thankful for the love and support I and my family have received during my time as Grand Knight. It was a difficult three years. Starting out with Covid, having meetings outside in the parking lot, Zoom meetings, coming up with drive-through fish fries with social distancing, the passing of my son, getting Covid three times surgeries, etc. The way this group responded was just outstanding. When someone is down, you lift them up and pick up the slack to keep things going. I am so grateful for the time I have served this Council. I truly did get a different perspective of the goodness that is in all of you people while leading this group.

I have had many people come to me with kind words about the job I did as Grand Knight. While I do appreciate them, I do usually try to point out that I really did not do that much. It is this Council that is so great! I won’t go as far as to say that it runs itself...but it is pretty close. Just a little nudge here and there is all that is required. I have grown very close to some of you, and I am very thankful for this experience. It is wonderful to see all the great things that we can do when we, the men and women of this Council, work together toward the common goal of doing good works for others.

I feel truly blessed...and from the bottom of my heart, I thank you all.

Vivat Jesus!

Tom Gray

Past Grand Knight
Spot Knightshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09882455437043227991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8497809046683305270.post-8428256344217924872023-06-03T10:31:00.001-04:002023-06-03T10:31:02.715-04:00From Brother Kurt Buhlinger

Spot Knightshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09882455437043227991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8497809046683305270.post-12246074976438146702023-05-29T10:53:00.001-04:002023-05-29T10:54:13.422-04:00Tom & Renee Gray<p class="p1" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Had a great time at the Knights of Columbus conference on Mackinaw Island.
